A Guide on Types of Cranes in Construction

Making a job easier is one way to ensure that a job is completed on time and with the most efficiency, and using a crane in construction is one way to make sure all those heavy loads are taken care of.

Cranes are used for many different purposes in the construction industry. Carrying on reading below to get a better understanding of the different types of cranes in construction today!

Mobile Rough Terrain Crane

A rough terrain crane is a mobile crane mounted onto a chassis with usually four oversized tires. These cranes are usually smaller than other cranes making it easier to get to job sites that are off the beaten track or down narrow roads.

This crane uses outriggers to maintain stability during lifts and offers a range of maximum lifting capacity depending on the size of the crane. The one major benefit of this crane is that both axles have differentials that propel all four wheels forward, making it four-wheel drive.

The Types Of Cranes In Construction: Tower Crane

Probably the most recognizable of all types of cranes in construction, a tower crane is often large, standing tall in the middle of a job site for the whole world to see. The reason for using such a massive crane is because they have incredible stability and can do the toughest of tasks.

Their height, loading capacity, and lift capacity cant be matched by any other crane in the world. The only downside to these cranes is that they are expensive to erect and are time-consuming when they need to be transported from one site to another.

Sea Side Harbor Crane

A harbor cran is one of the types of cranes in construction that is erected in a harbor, its main function is to load and unload freight onto a cargo ship and onto a truck as well. This type of crane is very similar to bridge cranes on job sites.

This type of crane offers high flexibility in combination with low operating costs, so it makes sense as to why ports use them for fast, efficient use.

Self Erecting Tower Crane

The lightweights in the crane family, a self-erecting crane, is designed to be set up and dismantled easily and can usually be set up within an hour of getting to the job site.

This type of crane is ideal for working in tight spaces, where maneuvering is difficult, and in short-term construction jobs. The only major drawback is that they can’t lift as much weight as other types of cranes.

Crawler Crane

These cranes are mounted onto a large, heavy vehicle with threads, similar to those found on diggers and tanks. The threads give this crane the ability to move over mud and marshy ground, which other types of machinery will get stuck in. These cranes can lift the heaviest of all mobile construction cranes.

No Object Is Too Heavy

The immense loading capacity of all types of cranes in construction is what makes these machines so popular in construction, and every high-rise building has them to thank for being able to be built.
