What Is The Importance Of Physiology?

Physiology has played a huge role in the understanding of the human body and how it works. This understanding of the human body has brought about a wide range of advancements in the medical field. In fact, fitness and wellness coaches, including those teaching Pilates in Sydney, leverage the knowledge of physiology to deliver exercises that address certain issues in the body.

Being the study of the human body and how it reacts to internal and external factors, the study of human physiology has given humans a better view of the physics and chemistry behind basic body functions. Now, we know the function of each organ in the body and how they react to different chemicals. Physiology also gives humans an idea of what a healthy human body is and what a diseased, stressed, or sick human body looks like. Essentially, this knowledge has equipped humans with the different ways to manipulate the human body to get desired results.

Most of what we know about physiology today is thanks to the ongoing research in various labs across the world on how the body reacts to different conditions. Some physiologists narrow down their research to something as minute as a single protein and how it affects the body under different conditions. Some are more interested in how cells are formed and how they interact with one another to give rise to a complex organism. The various stages of human development and the levels of complexities from cells to tissues, organs, and systems are also studied under human physiology.

Physiology vs Anatomy

One of the commonest pairs of terms in the medical world is anatomy and physiology. While physiology is more focused on how the body works in different environments and in response to different chemicals and stimuli, anatomy focuses more on the body’s structure. An imaging test like an MRI, CT, or X-ray can give information about a person’s anatomy, while physiology is often tested using body products like blood, urine, and feces. In terms of the body’s physiology, the health of the heart can also be tested using electrocardiograms (EKGs). An idea about how the heart is can give a general overview of the condition a person is in.

Physiology and the Human Body

Physiology tells a lot about the human body. Each person’s physiological data can be used to determine whether they are healthy or not. To better understand the importance of physiology and the human body, consider the following information offered by physiology about human health. Physiological studies cover the following aspects of human health;

  • The muscular system gives an idea of how muscles build, diminish, grow and repair.
  • The digestive system gives insight into what happens along the digestive tract from the mouth into the stomach, intestines, and other organs involved in food digestion.
  • The cardiovascular system gives information about the heart’s health as well as the function and network of the blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the lungs across the body.
  • The endocrine system studies the different hormonal glands, what they produce, and how each of those hormones affects humans and their development. This also studies the origin and targets of different hormones.
  • The nervous system focuses on the nerves and interconnectivity between the spinal cord, brain, and neural network in the body.
  • The reproductive system offers a clear view of the differences between the male and female sex gender, what does on at each stage of development, puberty, reproduction, and more.
  • The renal system offers a view of the function and activities of the kidneys, how they perform filtrations, their importance in urine formation, and how they control bodily fluids.
  • The skeletal system and how it provides frame and support to all of the cells and organs in the body. It also gives an insight into the different constituents of the system, including the bones, cartilage, connective tissue, and joints.
  • The respiratory system explains the functions of the lungs and how respiration works for humans.

Physiology looks into each of the systems in the body and offers all of the information needed to improve health and wellness. Fitness and wellness professionals leverage this information to understand the muscles and the endocrine system, amongst other systems in the body. An understanding of the systems enables them to draw up a healthy fitness plan that takes into account all areas of the client’s body and how to help them address their specific health needs. Physiotherapists also take advantage of this to perform manipulations, massages, and other treatment modalities that address pain and discomfort.
