A few questions have likely arisen inside your mind. What is the national honor society? And what are the benefits of joining an honor society while you’re in high school?
We’ll tell you all you need to know about joining a national honor society. Keep reading to learn more about earning an honor society membership and so much more.
National Honor Society: What Is It?
The national honor society (NHS) has four important pillars. The four pillars include scholarship, leadership, service, and character. You can find the chapters of the NHS in the United States, Canada, and other countries around the globe.
Chapter membership recognizes many students for their accomplishments. It also challenges them to get involved within their community and school.
The NHS chapters and students care about student achievement and community involvement.
Before the foundation of the NHS in 1921, there were many local honor societies. But, the NHS has achieved a nationwide response.
The Four Pillars: Explained
For the scholarship part for the NHS, this means students much maintain a GPA of 3.0. This is measured on a 4.0 scale.
That’s about an 85 percent or, in letter grading, a B. Individual chapters may include a higher GPA.
To earn membership, some chapters have a set number of community hours a student needs. The NHS wants students who contribute ideas and act resourcefully.
Students must prove that they’re responsible within their community. This includes honest behavior and a clean disciplinary record.
