Uncertainty 50k Pegasuszetter Zeroday: On October 12th, the day after federal agents raided the “Pony Express” delivery service in Oakland, California, an unreliable list of about 50,000 potential targets for a planned FBI raid was released to law enforcement as well as to media outlets by an Oakland Police Department officer. The list contained names and addresses that are publicly available on sources like property tax records or white supremacist websites and forums.
Entering the list of addresses into any online mapping program will show the location of residences, businesses and government offices.
The next day, records of property tax payments from a number of those listed properties were posted online by the Los Angeles Times . They showed that several had been making payments on their property taxes. The “Washington Post” confirmed that two people targeted were paying for their homes with their own names and confirmed that other targets were public officials.
The appearance of the list in Oakland and its dissemination by an armed officer was seen as a direct threat to those listed. If they were indeed targeted by the FBI, they would have had no opportunity to protest the matter or raise their concerns with the FBI.
Reporters were also unable to obtain details on how the list came into being and how it was used leading up to the raid.
On November 13, the LA Times posted a copy of a list they had obtained from Oakland and showed that it was not as inaccurate as suspected but still had several incorrect names on it. The “Wall Street Journal” also published an article on November 14th that said that the FBI and local police had been using the list to target members of the white supremacist gang, the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas.
They reported that the list contained the names of two people affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood and that a third person was targeted by mistake.
According to the “Wall Street Journal” article, federal agents are concerned about whether their informants inside of white supremacist organizations have been giving them accurate information. The sources of inaccurate information have been blamed on informants who have their own agendas and who may be using misinformation to curry favor with their handlers.
