Tiiimber! – What the Heck Is a Tree Harvester?

We all remember the dark days when toilet paper shortages spread across the nation. It was during those times that we came to appreciate what trees provide our society with!

As of 2020, about 15 billion trees get harvested each year. First, they’re hand-picked and market. Then, a tree harvester machine picks it up, cuts it, and removes its limbs. This one machine allows humans to stay safe inside the cab while cutting trees.

Are you interested in learning more about tree harvesters? Read on to learn everything you need to know about harvesting wood using the latest tech.

How a Tree Harvester Works

Have you ever considered how difficult it would be to cut down trees? The reason you likely haven’t is because we have awesome technology these days. Long gone are the days when lumberjacks had to work all day harvesting trees. Now, they use a tree harvester.

A tree harvester machine can cut a tree at its base, remove a tree’s limbs, and then cut it into a standard log size. An operator controls all these functions from the cab.

Once the harvester’s job’s complete, loaders haul off the standard logs.

Tree Harvesters: Other Uses and Limitations

Cutting trees down is the most obvious use of a tree harvester. These machines thrive with tree species like aspen, fir, pine, and spruce. They are popular with paper mills and other industries that use standard 8-foot logs.

That’s not all the machine can do, though!

Harvesters are also used to create material for cables and helicopters. The machines process the stems and turns.

The machine does have its limitations, though. They can’t get used on slopes, so manual cutting needs to take place in these areas. They also don’t work well on wet or loose ground.

Tree size and form matter, too. Harvesters don’t work on any tree. They must be a specific species, size, and fit. Then, a tree harvester machine picks it up, cuts it, and removes its limbs. This one machine allows humans to stay safe inside the cab while cutting trees.

Are Forestry Machines Important?

It’s clear that harvesters play a major role in tree operations across the globe. Are they important, though? The short answer is — yes!!

Harvesters help keep humans safe. By using these machines, humans face less risk when cutting trees. Trees are so important to our global society, too. We need live trees to help support our environment, but we need to use harvested trees to support society.

Harvested trees become the paper and wood products we later use in so many industries.

Help Support Forests and Forestry Technology in 2022 and Beyond

A tree harvester might sound like an archaic or unimportant tool, but it’s very crucial. Without tree harvesters, logging would be a very dangerous profession. Plus, workers would have to saw down the trees themselves.

Now, you can understand why lumberjacks were so buff!
