Camping is more popular than it’s ever been. Over the last two years, international travelling has been heavily restricted and people have been exploring their own countries. In doing this, many have discovered the wonders of camping for the first time. 

As long-time camping enthusiasts, we wanted to share some of our wisdom with you today. So, we have put together a list of 10 things to pack for your next outdoor adventure. 

#1 – Spare socks

How many pairs of socks were you thinking about packing? Well, double it. You’ll be surprised by how many pairs you will go through on a camping trip. On one particularly cold night we found ourselves wearing two pairs of socks on our feet and a pair on our hands too. 

Regularly changing your socks is a great way to avoid athlete’s foot and other similar issues. 

#2 – Waterproof tent

Even if you are visiting a dry area, you will need to get yourself a tent made from waterproof canvas tent surfaces. One of the only downsides of camping is that the weather can be unpredictable and a good camper is prepared for any situation. 

It is also worth remembering that most areas will be covered with dew in the morning, which will leak through non-waterproof tents. 

#3 – A first aid kit

This is an absolutely essential item. Camping is generally a fun and safe activity but it does expose you to more dangers than a day next to the pool would (that’s what makes it so fun). 

Having a fully stocked first aid kit means that whatever happens on your trip, you and your fellow travelers will be fine. 

First aid kits can save lives! 

#4 – An up-to-date, waterproof map

Never go camping with a map that is older than three years. Areas can change quickly – forests can be felled, boundaries can be changed, and lakes can be dredged. 

An up-to-date map will prevent you from getting lost because the landscape around you has changed. 

#5 – A composting toilet

Contrary to popular belief, it is not safe to bury human waste in the ground (unless you dig a six foot hole). It can spread diseases amongst both animals and humans who travel through that area. 

Instead of burying your waste, you should get a composting toilet. These don’t smell and they are easy to transport. At the end of your trip, you can bag up the waste and dispose of it safely.  

#6 – A list of the emergency contacts in the area

This is another item that can save lives. We heard stories about campers who’ve come across injured hikers on their trips and have been able to get them to safety because they have had the local emergency contact details to hand. 

This is something you should prepare before you leave. 

#7 – A pack of cards

A pack of cards is a tiny item that can bring a boatload of joy to your trip. You can fit a pack of cards in your pocket and you can use them to play over 100 different types of games. If you are stuck for entertainment on your trip then this item will help you out.  

#8 – High quality camping stove

Camping is a cheap activity. However, we recommend that you invest in and get high quality versions of the following three items: a sleeping bag (see later), a waterproof tent, and a camping stove. 

Your camping stove will make your morning cup of coffee, your hot dinner, and you can even make s’mores on it. It is important to get one that works well and is easy to use. 

#9 – Sunscreen

Skin cancer experts recommend that we wear sunscreen every day of the year because UV rays are powerful enough to pass through clouds. It is extra important to wear sunscreen while you are camping. 

You will likely be spending more time outside than you usually do, and you will want to avoid getting sunburnt at all costs.  

#10 – Thermal sleeping bag

Finally, we recommend that no matter where you are going, you travel with a thermal sleeping bag. 

While some places can be really warm during the day, the drop in temperature overnight can be enough to make someone unwell – if they are not adequately hydrated and wrapped up. A thermal sleeping bag will solve this problem for you.
