The complete video production equipment list for beginner

If you are just starting out in video production, it can be overwhelming trying to decide what equipment to buy. This comprehensive list will help you choose the right gear for your needs. From cameras and lenses to lighting and audio, we have you covered. So whether you are shooting a corporate video or a feature film, this equipment will get you started on the right path.

For more experienced videographers, we also include an overview of key features to look for when purchasing new equipment. And for those on a tight budget, we have included some affordable alternatives that will still give you quality results. So whatever your level of experience, we have got you covered.

Complete list of video production equipment

1.   Cameras

For shooting video, we recommend a digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera with 1080p footage capabilities and interchangeable lenses.

DSLR cameras are the workhorse of most professional filmmakers. They allow you to change lenses, achieve shallow depth of field and provide manual control over focus, white balance, and exposure. For video, they shoot 1080p HD at 30fps (frames per second). Some can even shoot in 4K UHD.

2.   Lighting

Lighting is key to creating a great-looking video. You can either go with natural light or use artificial lights.

What are the different types of lighting?

There are three main types of lighting: Key, Fill, and Backlight.

The key light is the main light source and should be positioned in front of the subject, facing them directly. It should be bright enough to create a well-defined shadow on the opposite side of the face.

Fill light is used to soften the shadows created by the key light. It is typically placed to the side of and slightly behind the subject, and should be less bright than the key light.

Backlight is used to add separation from the background and should be positioned behind the subject, facing the background.

3. Tripods, dollies, and sliders

A tripod is a must-have piece of equipment for any videographer. It allows you to stabilize your camera and prevent unwanted motion blur.

What are the different types of tripods?

Tripods come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They typically fall into one of three categories: Standard, Fluid Head, or Slider.

  • Standard – these are the least expensive type of tripod and are best for everyday use. The legs can move independently allowing you to adjust to uneven surfaces. However, they do not provide smooth panning movements. Also, if you try to move them too quickly or carry too much weight, they can become unstable.
  • Fluid Head – these have a single vertical fluid head attached to two telescoping legs that allow you to position your camera at any angle smoothly without jerking movements at all-time speeds However, they usually cost more than standard tripods.
  • Slider – these are the most expensive type of tripod but they allow you to create super smooth panning shots without any vibration or jerking movements. If you are shooting on a budget, cheaper alternatives exist for this equipment. For example, using two tripods with a pulley system is an effective way to simulate slider movement.

4. Software

Video editing software allows you to import video clips and images, trim them into smaller pieces, add transitions, titles, and audio tracks. You can then save your edited files as a movie or export it back to your camera in the form of an mp4 file.

5. Accessories

Several other accessories can make shooting video easier and more efficient, including:

  • Memory cards – these allow you to store your footage before editing. We recommend using Class 10 or UHS-1 cards for faster write speeds.
  • Batteries – always have a spare battery handy in case your camera runs out of power in the middle of a shoot.
  • Lens filters – these help to control the amount of light that enters the lens and can be used to improve image quality.
  • Microphones – external microphones can capture better sound quality than the built-in microphone on your camera.
  • Monitors – having an external monitor will allow you to accurately judge focus and composition while shooting.
