5 Signs That Your Hormones May Be Imbalanced

These days, you’ll find products for everything online whether you want to improve your diet, clean your lawnmower, or become a more accomplished harmonica player. Another trend in recent years has been medicine for hormonal imbalance. What started as a trend has since transformed into a lifestyle change. But how do you know that your hormones are imbalanced? Here are five common signs!

Problems with Skin and Hair

Firstly, one of the most common changes with a hormone imbalance occurs in the skin and hair. While the thyroid hormone causes brittle and thin hair, androgen hormones stimulate the skin’s hair follicles and oil glands. Either way, you may have noticed more acne than normal or dry skin – many people with a hormonal imbalance suffer from eczema and other skin conditions.

Night Sweats

Not the most pleasant of experiences, but a hormonal imbalance could be to blame for sweating during the night. Of course, other causes of night sweats exist such as a high thermostat or a thick duvet. However, a drop in oestrogen can cause night sweats, and this is why they’re common in women who have just given birth.

Weight Gain

Have you recently gained weight unexpectedly? You’re still eating healthily and you’re exercising regularly, but you seem to be putting on a few pounds rather than losing them. If so, this won’t come as a surprise since it’s the theme of this guide, but your hormones could be the problem.

Firstly, some people experience weight gain because of an imbalance with insulin and the thyroid. Alternatively, it could be that you have too much cortisol in the body, commonly known as the stress hormone. What’s more, your ghrelin and leptin levels could be off since these control fullness and hunger. If any of these components are imbalanced, you may struggle to keep weight off regardless of your positive habits elsewhere in life.

Poor Sleep

You’ve seen that some people sweat in the night, and others struggle to sleep entirely. When the HPA (hypothalamic pituitary adrenal) axis is off, this can lead to insomnia because it’s essentially the meeting place for the central nervous system and the endocrine system. Since it regulates your sleep-wake cycle and releases cortisol, melatonin, and other hormones, one small problem here and you might struggle to sleep.

Issues with Digestion

Finally, another common problem with hormonal imbalances is digestive issues. According to scientists, the digestive system has more neurotransmitters than the brain. Therefore, you won’t be surprised to hear that depression and anxiety often linked with hormonal imbalances also cause problems with digestion. We rely on the bacterial and microbiome systems to function the digestive system, and this function falls by the wayside with a hormonal imbalance

Often, people with a hormonal imbalance suffer from nausea, bloating, diarrhoea, or constipation (or a combination of all these symptoms).

Balancing Your Hormones

To finish, if you think that you’ve identified the problem, how do you go about rebalancing the hormones? Earlier, the introduction mentioned medicines and there are now some advanced products in this area. Other potential solutions include:

  • Eating more healthy fats
  • Increasing your intake of vitamin D
  • Taking probiotics
  • Utilising adaptogenic herbs

Also, don’t be afraid to speak with a medical professional if you’re concerned about a hormonal imbalance. They will either confirm the diagnosis or help with a different health problem; either way, you get a solution and hopefully alleviate problems affecting your life.
