Planning Your Funeral: What to Consider

Estimates show that by 2040, around eighty million people will die a year. If you want your death to be marked, you’ll want to have a funeral or a memorial service.

But, what do you need to do to make sure that your funeral goes off without a hitch? Read on to learn what you need to know when you’re planning your funeral.

Start By Budgeting

Funerals can be expensive. So, first, you’ll need to know how much money you’ll be setting aside for your funeral. You may want to prepay for some aspects of it, and you may want to ensure that adequate funds are set aside for your loved ones to pay for the rest.

You’ll also want to make sure that your family can access what they need to have your funeral in a timely manner, so let your executor know what you have in mind. A financial consultant may also be able to give you tips to streamline the process.

Decide How You Want To Go

There are obviously different ways you can be treated after you pass away. You can be buried, in which case you’ll have to choose a casket and a plot. You can also be cremated.

Cremation can be cheaper, and can also be more flexible. Just do plenty of research when you’re choosing a cremation service, so you know that you’re choosing the best option for you.

Plan Your Service

You’ll also need to plan the actual service. This may require you to leave detailed notes for your loved ones, particularly if you have specific requests for your funeral service.

You could have a traditional service, a graveside service, a memorial, or a celebration of life. Or, you can combine elements of these options.

Depending on your religion, there may be traditions you’ll want to follow. You can also have an event after the funeral itself. In some religions, the funeral is traditionally followed by a wake. In Judaism, the family traditionally sits shiva for several days before and after the funeral, with times for loved ones to come and pay their respects.

Put Someone in Charge

You’ll want to have one person dedicated to planning their funeral. They can have others help when the time comes, of course, but it’s important not to have too many cooks in the kitchen.

Pick someone you trust, and who won’t get overwhelmed with emotion in the aftermath of your passing. Go through your plan with them in detail, and ensure that they have contact information for everyone they need to get your funeral in motion. Have your plan in writing, too, so that they have notes they can go back to.

A lot of different factors go into planning your funeral. There’s the budgeting and importantly, you need a person who can execute your plans confidently.
