Planning a Move 101: 5 Great Pieces of Advice

It’s a well-documented fact that moving to a new home can be one of the most stressful events a person can go through. There’s so much to organize as well as the fact that moving out of one home can be emotional and arriving at another can be daunting—even if you’re excited for a change of scenery. But there are things you can do to make your move a little less stressful and a little more seamless.

If you’re in the process of planning a move and you’d like to make it a more pleasant experience, this guide can help. Read on for 5 pieces of advice you’ll want to remember.

1. Research Your New Area Well

It’s likely you’ll have looked into your new area before making the decision to move there, but we’re talking about more than just checking out the nightlife and local community. On the day of your move (and in the days following it), you’re going to be pretty busy. So before you do move, it’s a good idea to take note of where your local

  • convenience store
  • coffee shop
  • takeout
  • laundromat

are located—these are the things you’ll need in the immediate future, and it’s good to know exactly where they are.

2. Be as Organized as Possible

One of the easiest ways to take some stress out of the moving process is to plan ahead and be organized. This is often easier said than done, yes. But there are some little things you can do to keep things on track.

To-do lists and checklists are your best friends. Make lists for everything so you won’t forget to finish any important tasks or source any important items. Also, label everything in as much detail as possible—it will make organizing your new home much easier.

3. Choose Your Moving Company Carefully

The moving company you choose may seem like a small detail, but you’d be surprised at how much of a difference a quality one can make—and how much chaos a bad one can cause. Where possible, choose one with a stellar reputation. Bonus points if (like Muscleman Moving) they have a testimonials section on their website with lots of happy customers.

4. Make a Moving Budget

This point goes back to the previous tip about being organized, but it’s worth its own mention as well. Making a moving budget will allow you to see all of the costs involved in moving so you’re not surprised at the end of it all. Moves can be expensive, but making a budget and sticking to it can help keep those expenses to a minimum.

5. Lighten Your Load

Moving to a new house is a great opportunity to declutter and get rid of things you no longer want or need. Not only will it make moving easier (and potentially less expensive) but it may even help you earn a little bit of extra cash for your move. Try having a yard sale or selling your clothing online.
