Locked Out of Your Car? Here’s What to Do Next

Have you ever locked your keys inside your car?

If so, you’re not alone.

In fact, this has probably happened to most people at least once in their lifetime. That’s because it’s easy to be distracted for a moment, and your keys slip your mind.

Getting locked out of your car can be an extremely annoying situation, especially when you’re away from home, in the cold, or happen to be running late. Fortunately, this article can help.

Here we take a look at how to deal with a car lockout so that you’re not stranded any longer than necessary. Keep reading to get the inside scoop on what to do when you’ve left your keys in car.

Check All the Doors On Your Car

When you discover that you’ve locked your keys in the car, start by checking all the doors. You might be pleasantly surprised to discover that one of them is unlocked.

Quickly test each door handle, and pray that luck is on your side.

Call a Friend

The next option is to call a friend or family member who can help out. It’s important to let someone you’ve been locked out regardless, just so they can send help if necessary.

When you do manage to get hold of one of your contacts on the phone, be sure to let them know the situation, and either ask them to bring a spare key or tools that can help you unlock the door. This is especially important at night when you might be stranded outside in the cold.

Use a Coat Hanger

Make no mistake, attempting to unlock your car door with a coat hanger isn’t easy. First of all, you likely won’t have a coat hanger with you if you’re not at home.

But if you do have a hanger, you’ll need to straighten it as much as possible, form a hook at one end, and insert it through a gap in the window.

Keep in mind that it could take hours to unlock your door using this method.

Contact Roadside Assistance

Many car owners purchase roadside assistance as part of the price of their car. This feature enables you to contact an operator who can dispatch help as quickly as possible.

Of course, if you didn’t have roadside assistance prior to being locked out, this option isn’t available.

Call a Professional Locksmith

The best option for unlocking your car when your keys are inside is to call a locksmith. A professional locksmith company will have all the tools and training necessary to open your car without the risk of damaging the door or scratching the paint.

Be sure to call an experienced company like the pros at Advanced Locksmith.
