Iceland Vacation Tips You Need!

Its name and the fact that about 220 glaciers cover 10% of Iceland’s surface are not the only things making it cool. Adventure awaits you on this island.

Keep for Iceland vacation tips that will help make your stay memorable.

Packing for an Iceland Vacation

Pack for cold weather, even when visiting Iceland during the summer months. You can expect mostly warm temperatures in the summertime, but they can drop, so you will want warm socks, long sleeves, and a light Jacket. If you plan to visit lakes in the summer, also bring bug repellents.

Bring sunscreen despite what month you travel. Traveling up near the North Pole brings you closer to the sun, even though it feels colder. Snow actually reflects the sun back at you, making it especially important to protect your skin with SPF.

Anytime outside of summer, you will want to wear gloves outdoors. If head to this country during the winter, pack an insulated jacket and boots.

Pack a towel and swimsuit. You can swim in the hot springs during any season. And always bring a camera to capture the astounding views!

Payments

The Icelandic krona serves as this country’s currency. However, do not worry about packing a lot of cash for your vacation here.

You probably will not need to exchange your currency on the island at all. You can pay by credit card everywhere without a minimum on purchases.

Expect to need your pin for purchases. You cannot simply swipe and sign here.

Icelandic Food

Iceland’s culture revolves around its cold arctic landscape. Their native foods come from what their Norse and Celtic settlers came across on the island.

More sheep live in Iceland than do humans. So, much of their cousin revolves around this animal, making lamb their native dish.

Ask for the lamb soup, Kjotsupa, or the hotdog, pylsur. You will also enjoy their dairy options, like skyr and Icelandic ice cream.

Don’t leave without tasting fish from their cold, fresh Northern waters! Order cod steaks, or their famous dried fish, Hardfiskur.

Things to Do

Explore the gorgeous volcanic landscape by car and foot. Hike Skaftafell Nature Reserve, also known as Hiker’s Oasis, for a breathtaking experience.

Plan to pull at least one all-nighter, but not for parties. During the summer, the Northern location allows you to sunbathe at midnight on Nautholsvik Geothermal Beach. In the winter, watch the Northern Lights paint the sky from the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon.

Bathe in the volcanic hot springs at Blue Lagoon, Mývatn Nature Baths, Sky Lagoon, or secret Lagoon. Do not miss the opportunity for an amazing whale watching tour in either Reykjavik, Akureyri, or Husavik.

Getting Around

Rent a car to get around Iceland. They do not have a railway system, and buses will leave you on their schedule while excluding some places you may want to visit.

Pay extra for Wifi and GPS so that everybody in the car enjoys the trip and you do not end up lost. Budget money for much higher gas prices than you pay in the states. Find more info.
