How to Prepare for a Sensory Deprivation Tank Session?

A sensory deprivation tank session can relieve stress, provide mental clarity, and leave you feeling rejuvenated. The session involves immersing yourself in a water-filled tank and floating for several minutes. You’ll be deprived of the usual sensory input from sounds, sights, and textures, allowing you to focus on your thoughts. Adequate preparation will help you get the most from your sensory deprivation therapy. Here are a few ways to prepare for floatation therapy:

1.    Avoid Drugs, Alcohol, & Stimulants

Sensory deprivation sessions eliminate the usual distractions of sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing. You should avoid consuming caffeine, alcohol, and other drugs before the tank session. Such products can alter your senses, especially when combined with floatation.

Other drugs cause you to panic, vomit, feel nauseous, or even faint. Never drink any alcohol before your floatation therapy. You should also avoid chocolate, coffee, sodas, and other products that increase adrenaline. High adrenaline levels make it harder to relax.

2.    Take a Shower Before Your Session

A good shower before floatation therapy can help you loosen up and relax. You don’t want to go into the tank sweaty and uncomfortable. Take a shower right before you leave for the therapy. Some spas offer shower rooms you can use to freshen up before going into the tank.

Relaxation experts recommend a cold shower before your sensory deprivation session. If you must take a hot shower, don’t set the temperature too high. The float tank may seem cold in comparison and distract you from relaxing. You can take a hot shower immediately after.

3.    Avoid Waxing and Open Wounds

Floatation tanks contain Epsom salt, which can irritate open wounds and freshly waxed or shaved skin. If you have any open wounds or scratches, cover them with a liquid bandage before going into a floatation tank. You can also wait for the wounds to heal before your session.

Don’t go into a floatation tank if you have a rash or infected wound. The bacteria may compromise the tank’s water and cleanliness. You also won’t be able to relax as easily if the salty water enters your open wounds. The goal is to relax and deprive your mind of all senses, including touch.

4.    Don’t Drink or Eat Too Much

You should avoid heavy meals before floatation therapy. Eating or drinking too much will keep your digestive system working hard, making it difficult to relax. You can eat fiber-dense meals like leafy greens and fruits to avoid feeling hungry. A light meal will help you feel best throughout the session.

Relaxation experts also recommend avoiding drinking too much liquid before sensory deprivation tank sessions. Drinking too much fluid can be heavy on your bladder, so you should wait until after the session.

Finding a Spa With a Sensory Deprivation Tank

Preparing for a floatation session is easy, but you need the best facility to get the most from your therapy. Getting your sessions from a reputable floatation therapy spa is the best way to experience the benefits of sensory deprivation. Find facilities with multiple luxurious tanks. The best sensory deprivation tank should feature upscale finishes and an inviting environment that promotes relaxation. You can contact the spa for more insights on preparing for your session.
