How Ham Radio Works?

How does Ham Radio work? So, let’s see. Ham Radio is an amazing technology that allows you to talk with people around the world, without needing a phone line or internet access.

Note that it’s not just that you can talk to people around the world, but you can also send them text messages with your voice. You can even send them your GPS coordinates.

There are many different types of radios, but most have two things in common:

The ability to transmit voice communications over long distances, and Receive communications from other stations.

Note that these are point-to-point communications. There is no central switching tower or hub that routes calls. There are many different ways to do this, but for this article, we’ll be focusing on one of the most popular – Amateur Radio – otherwise known as Ham for short which mainly uses mobile transceivers.

Ham Radio is the use of radio signals for noncommercial purposes.

The origin of Ham Radio can be traced all the way back to 1895 when it was used by shipboard operators, but it wasn’t until more than two decades later that the first amateur radio station was established in 1907. The hobby grew slowly but steadily during the first few decades of its existence. This is no longer the case. The hobby has grown exponentially over the years, and this is especially true in recent years due to advances in technology that have made Ham Radio more accessible to people all over the world.

Why ham radios are gaining popularity

Reason #1

Ham radio is, perhaps, most often associated with the prepper subculture. However, the truth of the matter is that ham radio is easy to use, requires no license, and doesn’t require you to sign on to a service or subscription.

From day one, people have had an intrinsic need to communicate. And it is that need that has driven ham radio’s enduring popularity.

With more than six million licensed users, amateur radio (which is what ham radio is called) is the largest hobby in the United States; but it’s not just for hobbyists. Amateur radio operators are some of the most helpful people you’ll ever meet; it’s our own unique take on what it means to be a good neighbor.

Reason #2

The second reason ham radio is on the rise is that it can get you out of trouble. Whether you are in your vehicle or on foot, if you get stuck in the snow, cut off by a flash flood or tornado, or caught in an earthquake or any other crisis, you might be on your own for hours or even days. No power means no Internet access, no radio stations, no television. A battery-powered radio could be your only option for communication once normal services are interrupted. Ham radio can be lifesaving if the grid goes down due to weather, terrorism, or other scenarios where normal communication services are disrupted.

This is even more reason why you should take a few minutes to get licensed and maybe even build your own shortwave radio.

Reason #3

The third reason is that many people around the world are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of electromagnetic compliance. All cell phones and smartphones must adhere to a set of standards laid out by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) so that they don’t interfere with other wireless devices.

In short, rogue signals from a cell phone or a smartphone can cause all sorts of chaos with other wireless devices in the area.

This is an especially important consideration for ham radios because they operate on a set of frequencies that are also used by cell phones and smartphones. This means that a ham radio operator must have a device that complies with FCC standards or risk being shut down by government regulators. Because operating a ham radio is more complicated than simply picking up a device, there is a growing number of amateur operators who purchase equipment that complies with FCC standards.

Connectivity

The popular imagination is probably the biggest reason ham radio is regaining popularity. These days, Facebook, Twitter, etc., can be used to spread information, images, and videos quickly and easily with no cost whatsoever. For most people, that’s all the connectivity they need.

But for some of us, that just isn’t cutting it these days. We want to talk to our friends in real-time with no delays in service. We want to communicate with people when we want to, not when it’s convenient for them.

That’s where ham radio comes in. With ham radio, you can chat with people all around the world instantly…all for free! No wires, no ISP, no cell tower needed. We can send voice messages through shortwave radio waves to other ham operators anywhere in the world at any given time of day or night. We can send Morse code messages through oscillating waves that travel over severe distances. And we can even send full-color images using amateur television (ATV).

It’s not only fun and exciting, but it’s also a chance to rebuild some of the social connectivity lost in this rapidly expanding digital world of ours.
