Healthy people over age 55 can improve their memory skills by playing the Google Memory game. The game, which is free and available on your Android device or through a Web browser, shows you a list of words and then flips them over. You must remember where each word was – if you get three in a row correct, the next round becomes more difficult. Google Memory is offered as part of Project Malmo, an effort to create open-source artificial intelligence technologies for fun and scientific research.
Memory games help you improve your short-term memory, which can help you in daily life. Short-term memory helps you remember a phone number long enough to dial it, for example. Improving your working memory also helps you concentrate and retain new information, which is especially important as people age. Another benefit is having a better understanding of how the brain works, which can lead to a deeper appreciation of the mind’s more mysterious capabilities and quirks.
Read all the words before you start the game, so you don’t accidentally use memory recall based on meaning rather than on location. If a word is particularly familiar, try to remember it, even if it’s not in the right place. For example, if you have the word “dog” and then “cat,” but you know that they’re actually “singing” and “dining,” guess based on that knowledge. Google Memory is not just about remembering a word’s location, though. Instead, you need to remember the entire word by listing its parts in your head: “dog” then “cat singing” then “dining.”
Write a list of at least three words per day to track learning. Establish a natural rhythm of remembering and forgetting. This can be done by adding more words to the list each day. Many people will feel more comfortable if they associate forgetting with negative emotions, like fear or guilt. This can be accomplished by adding four words to the list each day that you absolutely do not want to forget, or by trying something like using a thumbtack on top of a number of words.
If you’re not good at remembering things, it’s time to get serious about improving your memory. The brain is an amazing and complicated thing, so don’t be surprised if you have to work hard to improve your memory. With the right techniques and the right amount of effort, though, you’ll be able to remember more than ever before.
