The Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation is an organization that has been providing education, prevention, support and advocacy for burn survivors since 1984. The foundation helps children and adults that suffer from burns by funding treatment programs, research in the field of skincare treatments as well as rehabilitation. In 2015 alone, the foundation helped more than 1,900 people with their various needs. They have also helped to fund over $25 million in medical research grants along with donating $1 million to help other organizations provide assistance to those who need it most during a time of crisis or emergency. The Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation was founded in 1980 by a small group of firefighters from different departments in the state of Georgia. Their goal has been to enhance burn awareness and support those who are going through tough times with their burns. The foundation aims to provide programs that help patients heal quickly, educate others on how to prevent hospital-acquired infections, give back to other burn foundations, and assist the burn centres throughout the state of Georgia. To date, they have been able to provide funds for quality equipment in hospitals, educational programs and scholarships for medical students and nurses that want to specialize in burns.

They are a non-profit organization so all donations go straight into helping those who need it the most. They also have several other ways that they help those in need – one of which is their mobile service program. This mobile service provides a means for burn survivors to receive the necessary services at home, including wound care treatments and physical and occupational therapy sessions (all treatments are free to those who qualify). The foundation also has staff members that travel to provide services to those who can’t make it out in public. The mobile service program also provides transportation so that burn survivors can get to their appointments, diagnostic tests and treatments that are provided by other organizations like the Georgia Department of Public Health or other health providers. In addition to all this, they also offer support groups for not just burn survivors but their parents as well.

The Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation aims to help those suffering from burns of all ages – including children and adults alike. They have a program called ‘Gabby’s Angels’ that was created in honour of Gabby Solis, who had to be put into a medically induced coma when she caught fire from a four-alarm house fire. This program gives back to families that need help, with the unfortunate event of a child being burned in an accident. The foundation helps with food and clothing expenses, donations towards medical bills as well as other necessities needed by the family while they are in pain.

Gabby’s Angels have helped nearly 500 families since launching in 2006 -we’ve calculated that they have been able to give out more than $3.2 million in assistance!

The foundation is led by a Board of Directors, which consist of people from different departments around the state. There are also several active committees such as the Grants and Awards Committee, Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Public Relations/Advertising Committee and the Education Committee. Throughout the year, they also hold events that help to raise funds for the cause such as their annual fire safety program. Each year, since 1990, members of all of Georgia’s Volunteer Fire Departments come together at the Gold Dome in Atlanta to host ‘Fire Safety Day. They have activities set up to educate people on how to stay safe at home and in the community. People who come to this event also have the chance to meet members of their local fire department, get free fire safety equipment or talk with a representative from the foundation about how they can help those going through tough times due to burns.
