Preschool children in a classroom for story time.
Parents often leave their kids to play by themselves. While this is also a good idea, children should have experiences playing with their parents. They can promote bonding, develop their movement skills and even become an active role model to them. There are lots of inexpensive activities that can help parents achieve these. Here are a few:
1. Toy Car Wash: This activity requires really few supplies. You would need a bowl. Fill it with a mixture of water and soap, then get a brush or sponge. You can buy toy cars or let the child wash the toys that are available at that moment.
Engage the child by asking what he/she is doing. Let them give you some sort of tour of their toys. With this, you would be communicating with the child and giving the child an opportunity to be expressive.
2. Ice and Water Buckets: This is a good activity for summer. Pour water in ice trays and freeze them. Use as many as possible for more ice pieces. When it’s frozen, pour it in a bowl and add enough water. With a small sieve or toy shovel, the child should separate the ice pieces from the water, with your supervision or even your participation.
3. Paint In a Bucket: For this activity, you can use dollar store paint and dollar store brushes. Get a bucket or bowl assigned to this activity and then, gather old toys or toys that the child is no longer interested in, and place them in the bowl. Get them to paint the toys with a different color.
When they are done, they will be fascinated by the toy again because it would feel like a new toy to them again. You can always do this activity with your child.
4. ABC Matching: This activity is educational as much as it is fun. All it requires is some flash cards (you can purchase some or make some yourself). Get some objects that have letters on them, like letter fridge magnets. Arrange the cards on the table and put the smaller objects in a bowl. Get the child to match the object with the card while reading the alphabet back to you.
5. White Slime: For this activity, you will need cornstarch and water. Corn starch is generally used to thicken things, so when added to water, it creates a mixture that is gooey and slimy, and kids can play with. They can put their toy in it and watch it sink, then search for them in the mixture. To mix it up, you can add food coloring to the mixture to make it colorful. This activity is quite amazing because all that is required for clean up after this activity is water!
Generally, playing with your kids improves their motor skills, mental abilities and emotional health. Once fun is involved, you will be forging a deep bond with your children, while keeping their minds active.
