Hoopla Covid19 Holocaustwoodcockvice: The ebook vendor Hoopla is offering titles with COVID-19 disinformation, conversion therapy, Holocaust denial, and more; librarians want more accountability.

Ebook vendors like Hoopla are offering titles with COVID-19 disinformation, conversion therapy, Holocaust denial, and more; librarians want more accountability. These books are available for checkout through the library’s catalog—and as of late September 2018 some libraries have agreed to purchase these titles because they’re considered to be in “public interest”.
Publishers can send “research” editions of banned books to libraries, disguised as plain vanilla titles that have no controversial content—but, according to the American Library Association (ALA), libraries should not purchase them.

Hoopla offers these titles through LibraryThing.com:

“Drawing on an extensive media file that documents the history of the Holocaust, this book challenges widely held perceptions about the Nazis’ complex and multifaceted societal role throughout the Third Reich’s existence. Researchers who are examining the impact of World War II on Holocaust and genocide studies will find this book a useful supplement to their research.” -Powells.com, September 19, 2018

“While scholarly research has focused on the economic and economic-social impacts of the concentration camps and their impact on families and communities, this book examines how women suffered in the camps.” -Powells.com, September 19, 2018

Hoopla also offers to offer “Suicide: The A-Z Guide to ending it all”, a book that claims that suicide is a “valid response” to groups like The United Church of Christ having “homosexual weddings”.

This news comes from a recent survey conducted by the Research Services of the American Library Association, a coalition of librarians dedicated to furthering high-quality research methods, open access to information, and more. The survey was sent out to more than 1,700 librarians in order to learn more about how libraries are using these controversial materials.
