Aboriginal History – Who They Are and How They Helped Shape Australia

Aboriginals in Australia were present well before colonization occurred by the British, which is a vital part of the history of Australia. As they lived within small groups with their families, there were several languages and different cultural aspects that varied across the area, and several of their traditions were unable to survive. However, those that have remained continue to shape the lives of their descendants. Today, while perhaps those that were lost have played an even bigger part in shaping Australia. 

Before Colonization

The community structures were created to fit their specific needs, with small families living with large groups of people who spoke the same language. They had specific borders that each group respected. Rules for interaction and socialization were different for each group, and they had their own laws, rules, education systems, and methods of using their resources. They passed down their own languages and customs, including ceremonies and customs. They handed down their information on the environment around them and how they could best interact with it. 

During Colonization

When the British ships landed and began to build their own lives there, it greatly impacted the already present communities. Many were separated, families were moved, some were sent to missions or forced to live on reserves, and violence was common as foreigners tried to implement white Australia policy. Through this process, there were often instances of them being denied the ability to maintain their own customs and traditions, causing many of them to be lost. Even through the colonization years, many of the customs and traditions remained and were passed down through generations and more. Some of the languages have been maintained and can still be heard today. This shows the resilience and determination that was maintained by the Aboriginal people, and they continue to share their history and background with new generations.

Diversity of Australia

The presence of each of these cultures within the country has maintained the wide diversity that is found there today. They have maintained their own languages and kinship ties, and this continues to add to the culture of the entire country and is celebrated by many during Australia day. As the symbols, history, communities, and cultural beliefs are passed down, they remain an active part of the lives of many and keep the roots of the country visible. With each of these communities sharing their own traditions with further generations, they can be kept alive. People from around the world have immigrated to Australia over the decades, and they continue to do so. There are people from many different countries who bring with them their own languages, religions, and belief systems that they then pass down through their families. These each add to the diversity of Australia and are part of the country as a whole. It is important that each be able to remain true to their beliefs and to maintain their own cultures so that no further cultural aspects are lost to history with no record of their importance.
