6 Errors with Product Packaging and How to Avoid Them

1. Complicated  Packaging 

The biggest mistake businesses have with product packaging designs is overcomplicating it. As a general rule, follow the KISS principle, otherwise known as “keep it simple stupid”. Make sure that yours is easy to understand and straightforward so it doesn’t put off customers. 

2. False Advertising 

As you consider packaging design ideas, avoid slapping on fake claims about your product. For instance, if you’re selling CBD oil, then don’t say it will cure cancer or other aggressive diseases. If you do, customers will think you’re a scam and take their business elsewhere, potentially putting yours at risk. 

Instead, be authentic about your product and embrace your brand identity as it’s far more effective.  

3. Wasteful Packaging 

Consumers love eco-friendly packaging, so ditch the cardboard packing peanuts and styrofoam. During the planning stage, measure each one of your products so you can create the perfect size. For example, avoid packing lip gloss in multiple boxes as customers will think you’re wasteful and choose a more eco-conscious brand. 

4. Print Mistakes 

A major mistake businesses make with packaging print and graphics is typos. Although it sounds minor, grammatical and spelling errors can instantly turn off customers. Not only does it show your lack of care, but it makes your business look unprofessional. 

5. Uneven White Space 

Knowing how to use white space can make or break your product packaging design. This is especially crucial if your brand has loud colors or the box is covered in bold patterns. If you’re not sure where to start, then hire a graphic designer as they understand how to use it properly. 

You should also design packaging that grabs the buyer’s attention within seconds. Because of this, you should create unique packaging that embraces color, design, and correct logo placement. Once you’ve designed the ultimate product packaging, don’t change it too soon, otherwise, it could confuse customers.  

6. Wrong Box Sizes 

When testing product packaging, make sure you factor in the size. If the box is too large, then the item has no protection and could end up breaking during transit. Plus, customers will think you’re tricking them about the oversized packaging, which sets a terrible first impression.
